How is Typing Speed Calculated?
Typing speed is universally measured in WPM (Words Per Minute). However, a "word" in typing tests isn't an actual English or Nepali word. Instead, a word is standardized as exactly 5 characters (including spaces and punctuation).
- Gross WPM: How fast you type overall. Calculated by dividing total characters typed by 5, then dividing by the time in minutes.
- Net WPM: Your true typing speed. This is your Gross WPM adjusted for errors. We calculate this by only counting correctly typed characters.
- Accuracy: The percentage of characters you typed correctly out of all characters typed.
Typing Speed Benchmarks
Wondering how you compare to others? Here are the standard benchmarks for typing speed:
- Beginner (0 - 20 WPM): Just starting out, likely looking at the keyboard while typing (hunt-and-peck).
- Average (20 - 40 WPM): The average speed for most casual computer users.
- Good (40 - 60 WPM): Above average. This is the speed required for most administrative or data entry jobs.
- Fast (60 - 80 WPM): Professional speed. Common among programmers, writers, and heavy computer users.
- Expert (80+ WPM): Top tier typists. Competitive typists can often exceed 120 WPM!
Tips to Improve Your Typing Speed
1. Use the Home Row: Place your left fingers on A, S, D, F and your right fingers on J, K, L, ;. This minimizes finger movement.
2. Don't Look at the Keyboard: This is called "touch typing". It builds muscle memory and allows you to look at the screen to spot errors immediately.
3. Focus on Accuracy First: Speed comes naturally with practice. If you try to type too fast, you'll make mistakes, and fixing mistakes takes more time than typing slowly and accurately.
4. Practice Daily: Even 10 minutes a day on our typing test can significantly improve your WPM over a few weeks.
