Did you know? South Asians have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMIs compared to other populations.

Because of this, the Asia-Pacific standard lowers the "Overweight" threshold from 25 to 23, and "Obese" from 30 to 27.5. This calculator shows both standards for your awareness.

About the Health Calculators

Asia-Pacific BMI Standard

The World Health Organization (WHO) standard defines "Overweight" as a BMI of 25 or higher. However, research shows that South Asian populations have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at lower BMIs.

Therefore, the Asia-Pacific standard lowers the "Overweight" threshold to 23, and "Obese" to 27.5. This provides a more accurate health assessment for people in Nepal.

Daily Calories (TDEE)

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is calculated using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered the most accurate formula for estimating basal metabolic rate (BMR).

To lose weight safely, a deficit of 250-500 calories per day is recommended. To gain weight, a surplus of 300-500 calories is ideal. Remember that a typical Nepali Dal-Bhat meal can contain 600-800 calories.

Water Intake

General guidelines suggest drinking 35ml of water per kilogram of body weight. However, this need increases in hot climates (like the Terai region) or at high altitudes (like the Himalayas) due to increased sweating and respiration.

Our calculator adjusts your recommended intake based on your environment to ensure you stay properly hydrated.
