What is Bikram Sambat (BS)?
Bikram Sambat (BS) is the official calendar of Nepal. It is a solar calendar established by the legendary emperor Vikramaditya. The Bikram Sambat calendar is approximately 56 years and 8.5 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar (AD).
In Nepal, the BS calendar is used for all official purposes, government documents, festivals, and daily life. The new year in BS typically starts in mid-April (Baisakh 1).
BS to AD Conversion Formula
While there isn't a simple mathematical formula to convert BS to AD due to the varying number of days in Nepali months (which can range from 29 to 32 days), the general rule of thumb is:
- Subtract 56 Years, 8 Months, and 15 Days from the BS date to get the approximate AD date.
- Add 56 Years, 8 Months, and 15 Days to the AD date to get the approximate BS date.
