How to calculate your trip fuel cost
Use this formula: Fuel cost = (Distance in km ÷ Mileage in km/litre) × Price per litre
Example: Kathmandu to Pokhara by bike
- Distance: 200 km
- Motorcycle mileage: 40 km/litre
- Petrol price (Zone 1): रू 179/litre
- Fuel needed: 200 ÷ 40 = 5 litres
- Total fuel cost: 5 × 179 = रू 895
Example: Kathmandu to Chitwan by car
- Distance: 165 km
- Car mileage: 15 km/litre
- Petrol price (Zone 1): रू 179/litre
- Fuel needed: 165 ÷ 15 = 11 litres
- Total fuel cost: 11 × 179 = रू 1,969

| Small car (Alto, WagonR, etc.) | 18–22 km/litre |
| Sedan (Verna, City, etc.) | 14–18 km/litre |

How does NOC decide fuel prices in Nepal?
NOC Nepal calculates fuel prices based on:
- International crude oil price (in USD per barrel, from global markets)
- USD/NPR exchange rate (from NRB)
- Shipping and import costs (from Raxaul/Birgunj to Nepal)
- NOC operating costs and storage fees
- Government taxes: customs duty, excise duty, road maintenance levy, value-added tax (VAT)
- Zone transportation surcharge (for Zone 2 and 3)
When global oil prices rise, NOC typically takes 1–2 months to revise Nepal fuel prices upward. Reductions often take longer, which is a frequent complaint from consumers and business groups.
Electric vehicles vs petrol — cost comparison in Nepal
With petrol at रू 179/litre and electricity at approximately रू 14/kWh:
| 10,000 km/year in Kathmandu | Petrol vehicle | Electric vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel/energy cost | ~रू 44,750 (250L at 40kmpl) | ~रू 2,333 (167 kWh at 14 Rs/kWh) |
| Annual fuel saving with EV | — | ~रू 42,000 |
| 5-year saving | — | ~रू 2,10,000 |
This is why electric two-wheelers are rapidly gaining popularity in Nepal's urban areas despite higher upfront cost.
